Welcome to the Rams - Varsity Flag Football
by posted 03/28/2022

Dear Rams Flag football Families,

I would like to welcome everyone to the Spring 2022 Flag Rams football team. This season promises to be a lot of fun with some nice competition as well.

My name is Patrick Fowler, along with Jesse Teller and Jay Thompson, we will be working with your child to instill some skills, good sportsmanship, fair play and ultimately fun this season. Listed below are some important announcements that will, hopefully, help you plan for the season ahead.

Practices: We will be holding practice every Thursday at 6:00 PM (approximaltey 1 hour and 15 minutes - weather dependent) at Dinosaur Park in East Windsor (address below). We do realize that it can be difficult to get your player to the fields on time. We will be flexible and we totally understand how tight everyone's schedules can be.

This week: 3/31/2022 We would like to hold a preliminary practice at Dinosaur Park. This practice will run from 6:00 - 7:15 PM. We will have introductions, review some basic plays and begin our preparation for the season. Please let me know if your child CANNOT make it to the practice. Thank you. We will also hold a practice this Saturday (04/2/2022) at 10:00 AM at Dinosaur park. Please dress your child for the elements (read layers) as it is going to be cold this week.

First Game: The first game is 4/9/2022 once the schedule is released I will let everyone know the time of the game. All games will be played at Disbrow field in East Windsor (address below).

A few guidelines that we strive to live by while coaching:

Playing time will be equally distributed amongst the players, as best we can. Especially during games when we have an odd number of players, it can be difficult to keep playing time completely even throughout a game. Please rest assured that we are doing our best to make certain that every player gets comparably equal time.

Touches on the ball is another metric that is difficult to evenly distribute. Please know that we strive to get every player involved and active in the games.

Communication: We will keep every family up to date on the game schedule and/or any changes in game times or days. The schedule will be available on the HEWYBL website (www.HEWYBL.comand you will receive email notifications.

Having Fun: The coaches philosophy is to, hopefully, ensure that all players and families have an enjoyable experience. Win, Lose or Draw- remember, this is a recreational flag football season. In a sporting environment it is easy to get caught up in the heat of the game. If players are observed showing poor sportsmanship to any player/coach/referee the offending player will be spoken to.

Parents: We hope that you encourage the kids to do well, compete and have fun. We ask that all adults on the sidelines not shout out directions to the players. This will only make our coaching job that much harder. Also, referees can assess a team penalty based on parents (and coaches) behavior.

Referees: Please do not yell at, admonish or engage with any of the referees. The majority of the referees are high school kids working on their volunteer hours. As a former referee who made some doozy bad calls I can tell you, while refereeing, a play may happen directly in front of you but you don't actually "see" it. If a ref makes a bad call, please do not yell at the refs, they are mostly young kids. If a bad call costs the team a win remember- every team makes the playoffs- and worst case scenario, we lose a flag football playoff game. We will all survive.

Rules of the game: If you are new to flag, please be aware that the rules for Flag Football are different from traditional football. There may be times when the referee makes a call that you don't understand because of those different rules. If you have any questions about the rules, I will do my best to answer them for you AFTER the game. Thank you. You can also review the rules by visiting the HEWYBL website.

Required Gear: Every player is required to wear a mouth guard at all times while on the field. If your player does not have a mouth guard, he or she will not be allowed to play until they get a mouth guard. We recomend you pick up extra mouth guards for the season as they will inevitably get lost. Cleats are encouraged but are not required. Baseball (metal spike) cleats are not allowed while playing for safety reasons.
